Gosh, it’s been a while since we have posted about the happenings here at the Camp Hope office…and now summer is almost here! This Spring has been a fun and busy one filled with a lot of activities.
A new interns class started in the interns4tomorrow program. The 12 interns began meeting monthly in January and starting next week, will begin their internships for the summer. Interns will work for 3 weeks at different business sponsors in the Atlanta area including Cbeyond, Concord Drugs, The Harwen Companies, IDI, Jackson Healthcare, MIQ Logistics, and QBE FIRST. Please keep our interns in your prayers as they travel to and from their internships!
Thirty Camper-turned-counselors attended the annual Counselor Retreat the first weekend in April. The retreat was held at Camp Evergreen in North Georgia and focused on “Walking the Talk.” Our three days together allowed students to fellowship together and deepen their faith. We also spent an entire day riding horses and ziplining at the nearby Sunburst Stables. The weekend was a memorable one! Check out pictures from our Facebook page.
In May, we held our annual Camp Hope Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Atlanta Country Club. The tournament was the highest attending golf tournament event yet with over 100 players. The tournament brought in close to $67,000 which will go towards Camp Hope 2011!! Thank you to everyone made the tournament a huge success!
And last, but definitely not least, we are gearing up for Camp Hope 2011! Only 54 DAYS LEFT! Camp Hope will be held July 17-22 (with counselors arriving on the 16th) again the Rock Eagle 4-H Campground in Eatonton, GA. We are busy entering camper and counselor applications at a speedy rate. Day 3:
Wednesday morning we woke up and took the Metro to the Holocaust Museum. The kids really enjoyed the museum. My group of girls took some time in the Hall of Remembrance and lit candles in honor of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. During our time in DC, one of our adults, Marian Andrews, led a devotion each morning. She focused the entire trip on how God is the good shepherd through John 10:11 – “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Through the Holocaust Museum, the kids saw the exact opposite of what a good shepherd is.
After the Holocaust museum, there was some free time so the group split to either go shopping or go get nails done. The group that went shopping went back to Union Station and our group went in search for a nail salon. After a lot of walking in circles (literally) we found a nail salon but did not have time for all 7 girls to get a manicure. We ended up at H&M for a little while until the group met up at the International Spy Museum. Before touring the museum, we had our own action spy adventure – Operation Spy where our group acted as spies to solve a mystery. Definitely a memorable moment for everyone and one of the kids’ favorite moments of the trip. After some time at the museum, we went to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and then walked next door to Ford’s Theatre for “A Christmas Carol.” This was another favorite of the kids. We walked home after the show but not before stopping a quick snack at McDonald’s – the trip was really defined by food!
Day 4
The trip went by so fast – it was amazing that the last day came so quickly. After breakfast and our morning meeting, I put the kids in charge. I told them our goal was to see the White House and visit the American History Museum but it was up to them to decide as a group how we would get there. This exercise was eye-opening for them and highly stressful as they had a difficult time agreeing on the best route. They learned a lot that morning – and after 2 hours we finally made it to the White House, but it was well worth it! We only had time for a nice lunch at Old Ebbit’s Grill before having to make it back to the hotel to get our luggage and check-in at Reagan National Airport to head home. One our way to the airport, everyone finally made it through the Metro without a hitch!! The group had become expert travelers!!
